First day arriving to Peru, I was anxious, excited and curious to see what awaited for me in this country. I know when I travel I get that feeling, and I love it! I decided to travel alone and not with the group. The reason I always do this is because I enjoy meeting people at the airport. I enjoy talking to strangers and practicing my communication skills. I'm glad I did because I ended up talking to a superintended from Skyler High School in Ne. I also got a chance to talk to a business owner and a Peruvian travel who told me about places I should visit. This is the first time in my life that my baggage did not arrive the same time I landed. I was a little nervous about it, but I received my baggage two days later. The first week was great! My roommate (host family all under 22 years) took me to a night club. We danced all night (literally). As we headed back to Lima, I met a stranger (guy) who was a little strange. He kept on telling me I was a special and kind person but wanted to hold my hand and touch my face. Strange, very strange. However, I can be very sure he was just not a normal stranger. The fruit here is amazing and fresh! I love food and I love that there is so much fresh food! There is a Mercado de Frutas which is like a Wal-Mart size store but with fruit. El centro of Lima is very interesting as well. It is definitely poverty in that area however, it is a reminder of how blessed we are in the United States. We went to the beach the next weekend (San Bartolo). The beach wasn't what I expected, there were many rocks and very crowded. However, it is the beach to I wasn't also complaining. I decided to go for a swim and later to find out I stepped on a sea urchin! Ouch! I had no idea what a sea urchin was until I researched it that night. Let's just say I was up until 2:30 a.m. trying to take it out of my foot. The next day I was determined to go to a clinic and get it out, because it hurt to walk on. They were a bit pricey so I decided to go to the beach with my family again in case there was a cheaper clinic there. Good thing I did because there was an ambulance van. We went to the van and they took them out with a needle like object. Yes, it hurt. However, the men who attended me were super nice. After we went to sit down at a table and there was a show going on. Everyone was dancing (including men) salsa, and they had dancing competitions (too bad my foot hurt). There was a person with a water hose spraying everyone. That beach was beautiful and I loved it! I also decided to join the gym here in Lima to work out. One of the best decisions I have made. I really enjoy working out and I have become close to the staff here at the Gold's Gym. You get your own personal trainer and the fitness classes are great! They have actual Latin music and moves! I go every morning to work out and love it! I still am looking for dancers here in Lima. It is a huge city and I know there has to be some breakers or Hip-Hop dancers around here. The University is beautiful, and the classes are going great so far! I enjoy having my mornings off and then go to class. As for the host families, some issues do occur. One would be not being enough food and not having a key. I figured these are simple necessities. I'm excited to see what next week brings us.
